CHAPTER 24
Well, hello, young lady, youâre back.
I didnât think Iâd see you when nothing was happening around here. Whatâs your name, if you donât mind me asking? And no running away this time until we have a conversation. Iâm lonely, too. By the way, you giggle a lot.
Okay, Iâll stay for a little while but only because you need me and thank you, my name is Mattie.
Mattie, what a pretty name. My name is Eddie, nice to meet you finally.
Nice to meet you, too, Eddie, but I already knew who you were.
So, why do I need you?
You need to protect a few people around here, especially Gerard. I like him, his baking reminds me of my motherâs and her peach pie. It was so yummy; I could almost taste it.
Heâs an amazing baker but I, I have to protect him?
Yes, and Annie, too. That guy, JT, is up to no good. Theyâll need your help.
How do you know this?
I can see the future, well, parts of it anyway.
Really? I canât see anything but what happens here and Iâm kind of stuck here. I canât see past these four walls sometimes.
I was stuck here, too, for a while. My family owned this land around the time of the Revolutionary War. I tap Gerardâs feet sometimes to remind him to get off my resting place. Franco did it all the time too and I warned him, but as you know, Franco didnât listen to us.
Wait, what are you talking about?
Iâm sorry, are you upset with me? When I hear that tone of voice, I know people are upset with me. I upset so many people, nobody wants to listen to me.
No, no, no, donât be upset. I donât want to upset you, Iâm happy to talk to you. I wonât ask questions like that. Iâm sorry.
I have to goâ¦
No, no, please stay, you have to help me. You said I need to protect Gerard and Annie. How do I do that?
Hmm, okay, Iâll help you, but youâll need energy, a lot of it. Youâll need to fill yourself with a maximum amount of energy in a short period of time. You might think youâll explode, but you wonât. Then youâll be able to move things with strength and precision.
Youâll have to show me. I, I donât want to mess things up, especially at a critical time.
Itâs easy. Iâll show you and you might even be able to show yourself to people every now and then, too.
Like you did?
Uh- huh, like I do.
Wait, come to the back of the kitchen, Gerard is coming in to work.
This morning went pretty smooth around here, no paranormal activity, no bumps, no sounds not much of anything. Until mid-morning.
There were four fluorescent light fixtures in the main kitchen area, each consisting of four bulbs, and the one fixture over my table that, on occasion, flickered on and off.
From time to time, I still felt a banging from the ground beneath my feet. These things seemed to happen randomly, at various times and unrelated to one another.
